File the renewal in the first fortnight of the window, not the last. Renewing your boravak is the same application as the first one with less suspense, and almost every renewal that goes wrong goes wrong on the calendar rather than on the documents: someone waits for the last week, a document turns out to have expired, and the permit runs out while they are chasing it. A request filed in time holds you legal while it is decided. A request filed late holds you nothing.
Checked on 31 October 2026 against welcometoserbia.gov.rs and the Law on Foreigners.
The window: three months, with a hard back wall
The portal’s page on extending your stay gives the window in one sentence: the request is submitted “no earlier than three months, and no later than the expiration of the previously approved temporary residence.”
So the window opens ninety-odd days before your card expires and shuts on the day it does. There is no grace period after that day written anywhere I can find, and I would not plan as if one existed.
The reason to use the front of the window is the sentence that follows it on the same page: a timely request lets you “stay in the Republic of Serbia until the end of the administrative procedure.” That is the protection renewal gives you, and it only exists if the request is in before the back wall. Filed in week one, a problem with a document is an inconvenience you fix inside the window. Filed in the final week, the same problem is a lapse.
Put three dates in your calendar on the day your current permit is issued:
- Expiry, minus four months — start gathering.
- Expiry, minus three months — the window opens; file within two weeks of this.
- Expiry, minus one month — if you have not filed, this is now the only thing you are doing.
What a renewal does to your dates
Two rules from welcometoserbia.gov.rs decide how much permit you actually get.
The new permit runs from the day after the old one ends. The extension’s validity is “calculated from the first day following the expiration date” of the previous permit. Filing early does not cost you the overlap; you do not lose three months by being punctual. This is the opposite of the first application, where the clock starts on the day you submit and the processing time comes out of your own permit — the subject of the three-year change.
The ceiling is up to three years, depending on the reason and the documents. The page says the permit is granted for “a maximum period of up to three years, depending on the reason for the stay and the attached documentation.” A renewal is a fresh look at what you attach, not a rubber stamp on last time’s length. An employment contract with a year left on it is a one-year argument, whatever you held before.
The folder, before the portal
The portal page for extensions does not list documents; it sends you to the card for your ground. What it does say is that the period depends on “the attached documentation”, which is the polite way of saying the folder is the application.
Across grounds, the core is the set your first application asked for — the same set MUP lists again for permanent residence, which tells you how stable it is. Have every item current, as a PDF and on paper, before the window opens:
| Item | What goes wrong at renewal |
|---|---|
| Passport | It must be valid at least three months beyond the period you are asking for. A passport that was fine two years ago may now cap your renewal at a few months. |
| Proof of means | Bank statements are dated. The one from your first file is not evidence of anything now. |
| Health insurance | It must be in force, not merely purchased once. A policy that quietly lapsed in month fourteen is the commonest gap. See the insurance post. |
| Registered address | The address the authority has on record must be where you actually live. If you moved and never re-registered, fix that first. |
| Proof of your ground | A current contract, a current APR extract, a current enrolment certificate. Whatever proved the basis last time has to prove it again, dated now. |
| Fee payment | Generate the payment order on euprava.gov.rs under Stranci and pay the amount it shows. The figure moves; do not take it from any blog, this one included. |
Bring two copies of everything to any counter you are called to. The day you bring one is the day they keep it.
The passport check, done properly
Count from the far end. If you want three years from the day after your current permit expires, your passport has to be valid for three years and three months from that day. If it is not, renew the passport before you file, not after. Your embassy’s timeline is now part of your residence timeline, and it is usually the slowest thing in it.
If the basis changed
This is the part people treat as a formality, and it is not one. A renewal assumes the reason you were given the permit is still true.
welcometoserbia.gov.rs says that if “the reason on the basis of which the temporary residence was granted ceases”, you contact the competent police office for foreigners. It does not lay out a general procedure for switching ground inside a renewal, and I am not going to invent one. What it does say, on its change-of-basis page:
- Changing employer on a single permit is possible during the permit’s validity “with prior approval from the relevant employment organization.” Prior, not after.
- A purpose that no longer matches a visa D means leaving when the visa expires and applying for a new one for the new purpose, in the page’s own example.
If you went from employee to preduzetnik, from student to employee, or out of a marriage that was your ground, do not file a renewal on the old basis and hope. Ask the foreigners' office in writing, or pay an advokat for one conversation — this is the narrow case where that fee is cheap. When the advokat is worth paying draws that line for every step, and the legal bases sets out the grounds you might be moving between.
Filing it
For employment-based grounds — which include self-employment — the request goes through the foreigners’ portal electronically, as the first one did. You receive a certificate that the procedure has been initiated, with your registration number on it. Keep that file somewhere you can produce it on your phone. Until the new card exists, that certificate and your expired card together are what you show.
If the application is approved, the portal says you attend in person at the competent authority, at your appointment, to give biometrics. The new card notes whether you have the right to work. Read that line on the card before you leave the counter, not when an employer asks.
The part I can tell you from how offices behave rather than from a regulation: a clerk who asks you to bring something tomorrow — donesite to sutra — is giving you a chance, not a refusal. Ask exactly which document, in which form, and whether a copy will do. Write it down in front of them. Inside the first weeks of your window, tomorrow costs you a morning. In the last week, it costs you the permit.
The habits that make the next renewal boring
The renewal is where three years of not looking catches up with you. Each anniversary of the permit, ten minutes:
- Is the passport still clear of the permit’s end by three months?
- Is the insurance in force today, with a certificate you can download?
- Is the address on record the address you sleep at?
- If you are self-employed, are the tax and contribution obligations current?
- Is the travel log up to date, both directions?
The last one is not about renewal at all. It is about permanent residence after three years, which counts every absence from the day you first filed and which most people only start thinking about at the renewal that comes just before it.
The verdict, restated
File in the first two weeks of the three-month window. Renew the passport first if it would cap the permit. Treat the renewal as a new application on today’s documents, not a copy of the old one. And if the reason you hold the permit has changed, sort that out before you file, in writing, because a renewal on a basis that is no longer true is the one mistake here that the early filing does not save.
